GROWING NEED FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

The first two quarters of 2007 showed a 3 percent drop in total advertising expenditures, the first time this has happened since 2001. Ad experts said that was just the beginning. They predicted that continued weakness in ad spending was here to stay across a wide range of traditional media – newspapers, radio, magazines and TV.

One industry, however, has recorded persistent, record growth: Internet advertising. Internet display advertising maintained its growth leadership position, registering a 17.7 percent increase in 2007 to $5.52 billion. See our Internet advertising article for more information on the growth of Web advertising as compared to other advertising mediums.

Current projections suggest the Internet will continue to be a leading resource in 2008-2009 for individuals seeking products and services. One good market indicator is the performance of Google, the largest player in the U.S. Internet search market. Despite a troubled economy in the first quarter of 2008, Google’s revenue generating advertisement links resulted in a 42% increase in profits during that time.

In April 2008, Google's chief economist Hal Varian noted that electronic commerce has grown about 22 percent in the last two years. He added: “The lesson here is that the economic slowdown is not an Internet slowdown.”

He is not the only person singing the praises of Internet advertising and marketing. Ed Garrubbo, chairman of the Electronic Retailing Association, pointed to an online sales jump of 17 percent in the first quarter of 2008.

Robert Atkinson, president of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, a non-partisan tech think tank, also predicted continued growth for online commerce. “The absolute growth has been steady now for several years. The Internet economy is almost counter-recessional,” Atkinson said.

Forrester Research, an independent technology and market research company, reported that online retail sales hit $175 billion in 2007, up 21 percent from the previous year. Forrester predicted online sales would pass the $200 billion mark in 2008 – and hit $334 billion by 2012.

Meanwhile, traditional advertising outlets are encountering stiff competition. Television has been dramatically affected by devices such as DVRs, which allow people to skip over commercials. MP3 players and other audio devices have caused a decrease in radio audiences. The Internet has been directly implicated in the decline in ad sales for the publisher of Yellow Pages.

While traditional mediums are running into difficulties, access to the Internet is becoming easier. Analysts predict that wireless connections through mobile phones will soon be widely used to access the Internet. Furthermore, new personal computers called “netbooks” are being developed that are smaller, simpler, and cost less than $500.

Internet access is now a part of the fabric of American society. A study from marketing research and consulting firm Parks Associates found that the number of U.S. households with Internet access has increased about 11 percent since 2006 to 82%. As of May 2008, nearly 162 million American were using the Internet each month.

The move to the Internet for vital information is embraced by nearly all age groups. A study by Jupiter Research and Ipsos Insight found that as of August 2007, American consumers aged 18-24 used the Internet an average of two more hours per week than they spent watching TV. Persons in the 25-44 age bracket split equal amounts of time between the Internet and TV.

More than three-fourths of Americans over the age of 50 consider the Internet an important source of information for them – up from 51 percent just five years ago, according to the American Association of Retired Persons. Industry analyst eMarketer.com reports that over the next four years the number of U.S. baby boomers who use the Internet at least once a month will grow by more than 4 million, rising from 59.4 million at the start of 2008 to 63.7 million in 2011.

Internet video is an increasing part of the online experience. In May 2008, two-thirds of U.S. Internet users – or 119 million people – reported they’d watched online video during the month. Mobile video viewing is also gaining ground. A 2008 Nielsen survey of about 2,000 Americans estimated that about 4.4 million subscribe to mobile video on their phones. The average user watched about 3 hours and 15 minutes a month on their small phone screens or handheld units.

These online trends illustrate why it is so important that you obtain a knowledgeable Web consulting firm to assist you in moving to the new methods of servicing legal clients. Clients must be able to find your business on the Web and your site must be compelling and provide value.
